Keep track of your portfolio on the go with takeStock the mobile portfolio manager.

Setup

You may load all of your stocks into your phone by entering the ticker, number of shares purchased, and price purchased. The application uses the price purchased times the number purchased to figure out the cost basis; this allows the application to base the up or down icon on your personal gain or loss.

The data that you enter is stored on your mobile device, which is how we can get away without asking you to give out your email to yet another web service.

The data comes from Yahoo finance and has an approximate 5 minute delay.

A little bit about the game …

Ever thought about striking it rich in the stock market? Now is your chance to simulate a high roller starting out with $100K (in fake money) and playing the market using real time quotes. Set up your portfolio, conduct research and make your picks. You can see what others are doing by taking a look at the leaderboard. Sound like fun? Go ahead and sign up.

Group Play

Want to compete as a group (schools!), just send me an email and I will get back to you about the ability to register users with group codes and track competing groups: stockgame@learnsomethings.com

Orders Allowed

Orders placed in the game are Market Orders, or orders to buy or sell a stock immediately at the best available current price. A market order guarantees execution, and it often has low commissions due to the minimal work brokers need to do. Be wary of using market orders on stocks with a low average daily volume: in such market conditions the ask price can be a lot higher than the current market price (resulting in a large spread). In other words, you may end up paying a whole lot more than you originally anticipated! It is much safer to use a market order on high-volume stocks.

Fees

Orders incur a $9.95 flat fee per transaction.

Margin

There is no margin availible in the game, you must have enough cash to cover your purchase, the program will lower the amount of shares purchased if you do not have cash to cover your trade.

After Hours / Before Hours Trading

You will be able to purchase stock based on the last closing price if you try to trade after hours or before hours.

Ask and Bid

What Does Ask Mean? The price a seller is willing to accept for a security, also known as the offer price. Along with the price, the ask quote will generally also stipulate the amount of the security willing to be sold at that price. This game assumes that you can fill your entire order at the ASK price.
What about Bid?

  • 1. An offer made by an investor, a trader or a dealer to buy a security. The bid will stipulate both the price at which the buyer is willing to purchase the security and the quantity to be purchased.
  • 2. The price at which a market maker is willing to buy a security. The market maker will also display an ask price, or the amount and price at which it is willing to sell.
  • The game uses the bid price to determine the price for your sale, you may not sell after hours.

    How do you play?

When you log in you get 100,000 deposited in your account as FCASH, you may then enter ticker symbols in the text box in the top left hand corner of the screen and place your order for the amount of shares you want to purchase. To sell just click on the link next to the shares you want to sell and fill in the amount. You can update the prices by clicking on the ‘Refresh Prices’ button.
